BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Compilation of information about the Hibben family, which was first documented in about 1750 in Chester County, Pennsylvania, began over fifty years ago. During the past fifteen years several Hibben descendants have intensified the research and created a comprehensive database on Rootsweb.com and Ancestry.com. Vital statistics, source documentation and researcher notes can be viewed on these web sites.

In April 2003 a book was published to convert all this data to a narrative history of the Hibben family. A limited number of copies of "....60 Poles To A Sugar Tree And Thence To The Beginning." A Social History of the Pioneer Hibben Family, 1730 to the early 1900s, was printed to fulfill a pre-publication subscription. Since 2003 a great deal of additonal documentation has been found and a number of genealogical errors noted. Appropriate revisions have been made to many chapters. The dates of revisions are listed above each chapter's heading. If you have read or downloaded chapters in the past, check to see if there is a more current version.

The primary objective of this web page is to provide a current editon of the book for those who have the original publication and an initial access to the narrative for those unable to obtain a copy.

HOW TO LOCATE INDIVIDUALS IN THIS WEB SITE

The CONTENTS page of this web site shows that the book is comprised of two parts: Beginnings and Descendant Lines. If the individual you are looking for was born in the mid-1700s, browse Chapters I and II. Most likely, however, the individual was born at a later date and is linked to one of the ten descendant lines - John, William, Rebeckah, Thomas, James, Mary, Phebe, Elizabeth, Samuel or Jane - (Chapters III through XII).
It is essential that you determine to which of these descendant lines that individual is linked. The best method is to go www.rootsweb.com , click on Family Trees (WorldConnect) 'Search Family Trees.' Enter the individual's name and other vital statistics you might have and search. Most likely you will find the individual and the list will show 'ghibben' as the submitter. Click on the name of the individual and the Hibben Family of Chester Co., PA database will fill the screen. Click on Pedigree and an ancestor chart will lead you back to one of the individuals mentioned above.

Then return to this web site www.hibbengenealogy.org and click on the appropriate chapter roman numeral for that descendant line. The first link on the chapter screen (page) is a descendant tree chart. It will show several generations of descendants which may identify the subject individual. If not, visit each of the generation links, such as 4.3, 5.1, 6.2, listed on this page. A click on the generation link will produce a PDF file which begins with a detailed descendant report for that generational family. This may identify the subject individual. If not, the search function of the PDF file should be used.

Also note that the book includes an Index - Related Surnames which is organized by descendant line. (Page following the bibliography)
Keep in mind that persons born after 1918 or who are living are not posted on Rootsweb.com WorldConnect. While a few living persons are mentioned in this book, vital statistics for living persons have not been recorded. If you are unsuccessful in your search, please contact me GHIBBEN@aol.com.
